Hello, Legoman here. Many people enjoyed the last trick question, so I decided to make another one. Here it goes:
A kid and an uncle are talking in the living room. The kid asks the uncle,"Uncle, I'm 20 years old. How old are you?" The uncle replies,"I am your age plus half of my age."
How old is the uncle? Post your answers/guesses and keep on smelling!
We have the answers right here!!!!
You could probably try a few guesses and find the answer by trial-and-error. But if you want to solve it using algebra, here's how I did it: using the letter Y to represent the Uncle's age, the equation is, Y = 20 + 0.5Y
ReplyDeleteVerbally, this is saying that the Uncle's age, Y, is equal to 20 (the nephew/niece's age) plus half the Uncle's age, or 0.5Y.
Solving for Y, the equation becomes: 0.5Y = 20
Which means, Y = 40! So the Uncle is 40 years old!
Huh? I didn't get the math. But,yes, that is correct! I will post the answers and put your name in it as first person to answer trick question #2.
ReplyDeleteIt seems confusing if you haven't learn algebra yet, but you're a pretty smart kid, Legoman. Want to learn some basic algebra next time you come over?
